  • CommentaryFor a few months in 1917, and permanently between July 1918 and 1923, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner lived on the Stafelalp above Davos, where he slowly recovered from the psychological wounds suffered during the First World War. The colored woodcut ‘Winter Moon Night’, made at the beginning of 1919, one of Kirchner’s print masterpieces, with its expressive coloring, draws on the artist’s experience of nature which he vividly describes in a letter to Nele van de Velde dated January 20th, 1919: “Early this morning, before sunrise, there was a fantastic moonset, the mountains entirely blue, the sky purple-red with pink clouds and the yellow crescent moon. It was amazingly beautiful but horribly cold.” In order to translate this stunning impression of color onto a woodcut, Kirchner worked with at least seven different printing blocks – one each per color, with the luminous white of the moonlit field in the foreground printed last. The woodcut medium fascinated Kirchner especially because of its specific formal language, and less because of its potential for producing a greater number of copies. Thus only a few prints were made, printed by Kirchner himself, especially of the lavishly prepared woodcuts. Indeed there are fewer than ten copies of the ‘Winter Moon Night’ in public and private hands.
