  • CommentaryThe exploration of his own person extends through Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s entire work and is especially manifest in his graphic prints. The Grafische Sammlung of the Museum Folkwang itself has-over six self portraits of the artist from the period between 1908 and 1926. The wood cutting ›Selbstporträt mit tanzendem Tod‹ has a special place within this group to the extant that Kirchner provides an unsparing look at his mental state in this print. From the time he was drafted into military servicein July 1915, from which he was released in November for being unfit for duty, Kirchner was so weakened both psychically and physically that artisitic work was barely possible. When preparing the printing block in 1918, Kirchner was considerably handicapped by paralysis in his hands, and his successful but tortuous struggle against alchohol and morphium addiction lay only a few months back. In view of this, it is not surprising that death and artist on the wood cutting seem to form an inseperable, symbiotic unit, with all activities start with dancing death, which the artist seems unable to oppose.
