  • CommentaryFor over 15 years Linda Karshan has been occupied with the question of process of drawing in her work. One the one hand she rejects any reflection on the question of composition before the drawing and entrusts completely her intuition in an ever new daily work process. On the other hand the artist strictly regulates this process, which also influences the form of the drawing. Linda Karshan works rhythmically: Often she begins to count in rhythm on her way to her studio and she sticks to this rhythm while drawing. At the end of a unit of rhythm she turns the paper ninety degrees and begins again to count and draw. This rhythmic form of working, together with frequent turning of the paper (often evidenced by fingerprints) leads to drawings which can be characterized by orthogonal stringency as well as enormous movement in the strokes of the lines. While this drawing from 1996 belongs more to the latter group, at the same time it illustrates quite clearly the transition from initially very dense works to drawings of the more recent past formed of just a few lines.
