  • CommentaryEnsor's still lifes of fruits and vegetables, porcelain, glass carafes and copper pots pushed together on a kitchen table follow in the tradition of late 16th and early 17th century Flemish stile lifes. However, Ensor transforms the Symbolism typical of his style of painting and a fidelity to nature that traditionally characterize this type of painting into a late Impressionist, somewhat grotesque sphere. The strange stillness and eeriness of the everyday objects are the focal point of pictorial interest. An almost Fauvist coloring and light surfaces of some of the objects depicted make the still life seem both present and unreal.
