  • CommentaryWilhelm von Kobell, part of a family of artists living in Mannheim since the 18th century, was named court painter in Munich in 1792, where he also was professor of landscape painting at the art academy from 1814 to 1826. His work and his teaching were influential in the acceptance of a new form of landscape painting, thus also preparing the way for the art of the later Munich School (Makart, Lenbach, Leibl among others).
‘Upper Bavarian Landscape with Hunters’ shows some features characteristic of the painter's late style. The group of main figures stands, as if on stage, in the foreground of an open landscape. Scenes of agricultural labor spread throughout serve to indicate the depth of the picture through a reduction in scale.
Although people, animals and scenery are presented in detail and realistically, the construction of the image seems strangely abstract. The straightness of the human figures and the two horses cuts the landscape which spreads out horizontally, and whose uniform layers below the horizon are enlivened by distorted forms of shadows.
