Photo: Museum Folkwang, Essen - CommentaryLouis Armand Aristide Bruant (1851-1925) began his music and stage career at the age of 15. An early high point was is regular appearances in the legendary cabaret ›Chat Noir‹, founded by Rodolphe Salis (1851-1897). Then, in 1885 he opened his own cabaret, the ›Mirliton‹ (at the former site of the ›Chat Noir‹). Here he insulted everybody and everything. His favourite targets for abuse were »Dandy’s with their high-class tarts« or those »born with a silver spoon in their mouths«. The only exception was ›stopper‹ – that is, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec – a friend of many years; Lautrec designed numerous variations of posters for the man with the red scarf. In 1925, Bruant appeared in Paris for the last time. He would probably be long-forgotten today if he had not been immortalized in Lautrec’s posters.
