  • CommentaryInvited by Gustave Courbet, Leibl travelled to Paris in 1869, where he lived and worked until the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war (1870/71). Within a few months, he succeeded in establishing himself there as an artist and in finding lucrative portraiture assignments. Furthermore, he was awarded a gold medal by the jury of the Salon des Refusés for his ‘Bildnis der Frau Gedon’ (1869).
Back in Munich, Leibl demonstratively rejected academic art and the doctrine of art it represented; other painters, including Carl Schuch and Wilhelm Trübner, joined him and formed, for a few years, the so-called Leibl circle. Leibl himself moved away from the city and lived until his early death in various Bavarian villages and small towns, whose inhabitants became his preferred models.
‘The Newspaper Reader’ surprises in its calculated depiction of the spatial situation. The chairs visible in the foreground and the table to the right define the space which the central figure of a peasant reading a newspaper claims for himself. The female figures placed behind are thus kept noticeably at a distance. Also remarkable is the exact descriptions of objects, which attains an almost photographic precision in his reproduction of the newspaper. Viewers are tempted to decipher the text – unexpectedly becoming readers themselves.
