  • CommentaryWilhelm Trübner transferred from the art school of his home town of Karlsruhe to the Academy in Munich where he studied under Wilhelm von Diez, among others. At the international art exhibition which took place there in the same year, he had the opportunity of getting to know works by Gustave Courbet and Édouard Manet. Like Wilhelm Leibl, whose circle he joined in 1870, Trübner also gained considerable inspiration for his own artistic development from contemporary French painting.

Trübner takes the occasion of the depiction of the ›Lady in Grey‹ to demonstrate his abilities with color. The strong contrast between the brightly colored flesh tones and the dark coloring of the rest of the surface, clothes, furniture, background) directs the gaze to the wealth of finely graduated tones of a single color – the grey mentioned in the title - spread between the face and the hands.
The application of paint typical for Trübner’s painting in the 1870s, with broad, short brushstrokes, here creates a structure of angles and burrs reproducing an alternation of light and shadow and linking the purely pictorial effect with the motif.
