  • CommentaryAs a latecomer to art who trained with the Hungarian painter Michael von Munkácsy in Paris, Fritz von Uhde likewise drew inspiration from French Realism and the first stirrings of Impressionism. After a stay in The Netherlands, he turned to New Testament themes and around the turn of the century did much to pioneer modernism in twentieth-century ecclesiastical art. In 1896, ten years after the death of his wife, Uhde purchased a country house in Percha on Lake Starnberg, where he enjoyed spending his summer months. His heavily Impressionistic painting ›Die Schulstunde‹ (The Lesson) homes in, however, on a scene of purely secular domesticity. The children are Uhde’s daughters, from left to right Sophie, Amelie, and Anna, who all sat for him, from time to time, in a variety of settings.
