  • CommentaryMathilde von Kaulbach, known as Quappi, the youngest daughter of the Munich painter Friedrich August von Kaulbach. His wife, twenty years his junior, inspired him to countless portraits and double portraits like this painting from 1941. The painting, a secretive meeting between Quappi and a man dressed as an Indian, was made in Amsterdam to where the couple had moved on the first day on the ›Entartete Kunst‹ exhibition in Munich (19 July, 1937).

The tight framing of the image typical for Beckmann shows two figures in an interior which cannot be more closely identified. Quappi is depicted in the background as if illuminated by a spotlight, with the man seen in profile, wearing a turban, a self-portrait of the artist rich in allusion, fills the dark foreground.
The scene seems like a snapshot of a play, a masked ball or a varieté show. As is well known, Beckmann repeatedly borrowed from the motifs of the circus, theatre and varieté to express the existential threat to his person and his artistic work in paintings of acrobats, actors and dancers.
