  • CommentaryHans Hartung’s sculptural reasoning is clearly evident in ›Komposition 1936–10‹ (Composition 1936–10): The artist takes a painterly approach to turning basic sculptural forms and reduced elements into an interplay of intertwining gestures. Positioned against a light, green-colored background is a dark-blue, amorphous form, which seems to envelop another flat, dark-blue hue. Sparingly used symbols and light or bold red lines enliven the emerging plane of color, lending it a spatial quality and suggesting a perspectival structure. Hartung reduced the pictorial space to several accents and thus arrived at an animated composition of structural clarity. According to Will Grohmann, »the pictorial means as the painter’s language move so far into the foreground that they capture our full attention at first. And with good reason, for they are more than merely a device; they mirror that which we used to call personal expression.«
