  • CommentaryTwo almost square color fields of a floating and immaterial range of hues, without contrast, separated by a narrow, horizontally painted bar lie on a monochrome surface. The tones of the colors create tangible vibrations and evoke an unfathomable depth in the painting, like a landscape, between heavens and earth, between the upper and the underworld. Rothko developed this space of symbolic, almost mystic character in his large format paintings from the late 40s. With Jackson Pollock and Barnett Newman, Rothko is among the most important artists of ›Abstract Expressionism‹.
