  • CommentaryAt Pechstein’s suggestion, Schmidt-Rottluff stayed at Nidden, a small fishing village on the Curonian Spit in East Prussia, from the end of May to the beginning of September, 1914. Apart from many nudes, generally dominated by a red tone, he made a few paintings of the coastal region between the lagoon and the sea. In a reduced formal language and with clear, harmonious colors – red, green, blue – the artist depicts the landscapes around his holiday home with rapid brushstrokes. Broken up and distorted forms characterize the turbulent landscape with rich vegetation. “I have occasionally come to an augmentation of forms that, while contrary to natural proportions, is consistent and proportioned in its spiritual relations” wrote Schmidt-Rottluff to his collector Gustav Schieffer in Hamburg.
In the summer of 1914, the artist was in Hohwacht and painted along the Holstein North Sea coast. Because the works made there are distinct stylistically from the landscapes made in Nidden, it is probable that Schmidt-Rottluff only signed and dated the Curonian Spit after his return to Berlin in 1914.
