  • Commentary›Skulptur 23‹ is one of the sculptor’s most avant-garde works. For his depiction of a human body Belling needed few anatomical details, reduced to their basic geometric forms, which form a Constructivist bust with the empty spaces formed by the sculpture. Belling modelled eyelids, eyeball, nose, lips and other details with wire and plaster, bound them together to make a mold. With this work Belling »was the first German sculptor« to divorce himself »from inherited classic prescriptions« (Carl Einstein, 1924). The head embodies a permeation of space, machine and man, representing for Belling the threat of a robot-like functionalization and dehumanization of the individual in modern industrial society.
