  • CommentaryThe pastel is one of the few examples in German art that reflects the Revolution of 1848. To prepare elections for the Frankfurt National Assembly and the Prussian National Assembly held in May, 1848, pre-assemblies of so-called primary voters, all male citizens above 24 years of age, were held. These primary voters selected – on a three class system –delegates who were to elect the representatives. Adolph Menzel took part in such a meeting in Berlin and drew the participants. This drawing formed the basis for three pastels, which were, however, made some months later in January 1849. The pastel in Essen illustrates very clearly the exceptional situation: Men of different ages and social background are engrossed in heated debate, others are listening attentively, while some seem completely exhausted. When Adolph Menzel made this pastel on the theme of primary voters, King Friedrich Wilhelm IV had already dissolved the Prussian National Assembly and imposed a constitution. The revolution had failed, but Menzel would not be prevented from honouring the events by capturing them in pastels.
