  • CommentaryThe work ›Condition‹ consists of a video production and a metal sculpture. In its form, the sculpture resembles a larva or a cocoon but also a peculiar chassis. A man is carrying the sculpture on his back as if he were being followed by a bothersome burden that he can’t escape.
Restlessly the man turns in circles. The camera follows not only the protagonists, but also its own circular movements. The sound and image create an impressive intensity. The viewer feels the man’s efforts. In the end the man shakes off the object, like an insect emerging from its shell.
The title refers to the term of physical condition, but equally to people not only being able to reflect as ›inner self‹ – that they are also externally and culturally conditioned. The theme of gender and body construction has been treated by the artist, born in Prague in 1955 and living in Canada, in various works.
