    Bauer was born in 1975 in Geneva Switzerland he studied there at the Ecole Supérieure d'Art Visuel Geneva till 1999 and in 2000 had his first solo exhibition in the, now closed, gallery Art-Magazine in Zurich. He showed here what would later become a major theme and from of his work; sets of drawings, drawn from personal memory or old family photographs, that made loose narratives, fragments of stories.

    Marc Bauer’s drawings are archeological in nature. They dig into the past, dotting the surface of time with disjointed fragments of bygone scenes and remains of ancient tragedies linking them to rifts in the present.[1]

    From 2002 till 2004 he attended the post-graduate class at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam where he lived till 2005 and then moved to Brussels.

    In 2005 he started the series of works History of Masculinity/Geschichte der Männlichkeit. With which he continued his research of his (family) history, linking it to international events and powers struggles.

    The issue of power is prevalent in Marc Bauer’s drawings. Power of fascist or Nazi officials, power of the father, social power, repressive and totalitarian power […] The figures of Mussolini, Hitler, Pinochet and the Pope (in a more elliptical fashion), permeate the book History of Masculinity published in 2007, which tackles how one “becomes a man” by conforming to tutelary and paternalist models, and to the precise codification of life-stages leading to masculine maturity, with all the stereotyping and revulsion involved.[2]

    In 2007 he compiled the book History of Masculinity with the drawings made in the previous years about this subject.

    Bauer moved to Berlin in 2006 and now lives and works in Zurich and Berlin.

    Other important works are Monument, Roman-Odessa, 2008 which deals with homosexuality, dictatorship and their historic context.

    He displaces the historic theme into today’s context and then ties it in with his own existence, which ultimately generates the relevance the subliminal stream of memory has for the here and now.[3]

    Bauer's drawings may be entrenched in the past, but they never drift into the cushy realm of nostalgia. Completely unsentimental, they instead keep an eye on present concerns. Roman-Odessa includes Bauer's copies of two of Eisenstein's own homoerotic sketches, while the drawings of cannons in Monument look alternately like phalli and penetrated orifices. Eisenstein was married and never openly stated his homosexuality, so by pointing to his suppressed desire, Bauer suggests that even in his utopian revolutionary epic the filmmaker had to compromise his notion of a fully liberated humanity.[4]

    And Herr und Knecht, 2010, a work he made in collaboration with Swiss philosopher Christine Abbt that deals with mechanisms of social control, what a country constitutes of and again power battles.
